When I look at your security, I think "Jock"

I file this under the kind of "creative idea" that just goes too far.

The folks over at CDW-G have a online tool for measuring your school safety index. This one uses "Scholar-Athlete" as the most desirable classification, and from there the go to "Jock", "Remedial" and "Nerd".

The idea is to illustrate the balanced goal of having physical security that's both technology based and physically focused.

Nothing new - you can't swing a dead cat now-a-days without hitting someone's "security measurement tool", "protection matrix" or "security metric".

The usefulness of these survey based measurement tools can be debated all day, and there are strong arguments on both sides of the issue

I've seen them become sales tools more than anything else now, and I'd hate to think that they are being used as a comprehensive assessment guide. Of course, something is better than nothing -- and there's something to be said for getting the ball rolling. I just know that it's easy to stop at "something" - and unfortunately - the easy way wins more often than not.

So - basically I'm saying that although it's commendable to help with assessment tools and similar metrics - great care should be taken. And it does not help set the right tone if you're using school clique names as classifications.
